pgRouting elephant.

pgRouting is an open source software package that adds routing functionality to the open source PostgreSQL database. It is used within a number of online routing services such as Ride the City.

pgRouting is an optional routing add-in for PostgreSQL (when the PostGIS package is also installed) and implements Shortest path Dijkstra Algorithm, Shortest Path A* algorithm, Shortest Path Shooting Star and Traveling Sales Person (TSP) algorithms.

pgRouting evolved from pgDijkstra - a routing algorithm that gives an exact result. The pgRouting website has a history for the project from its 2007 roots.

pgRouting is maintained by Orkney, Japan.

pgRouting makes it easier for people to create new routing services for many different sorts of user and also allows developers to cooperate to develop better and more satisfactory routing options.
