OpenPhotoVR allows users to stitch photographs with overlapping content together allowing a user to view a subject from different vantage points or to simulate navigate through an environment. Transitions using Flash allows the eye to make sense of the transitions.

History

The first post on the blog was Feb 08 in Russian.[1] with an English version from March 08[2]. Zooomr may have demonstrated the idea previously[3] and it similarities to Microsoft PhotoSynth[4] and in June 08 Google launched similar functionality on Panoramio[5].

Impact

Being able to stitch photographs together like this will call for the construction of virtual transport interchanges allowing people to 'walk' through the interchange find the correct platform before meeting the situation in reality. Given the bottom-up nature of the data collection and image association this can be done by volunteers as required.
